The Byrds - AVALON BALLROOM SAN FRANCISCO NOVEMBER 2ND 1968 ((Vinyl))
This long-circulated bootleg recording captures one of the first appearances of the Byrds in their lineup that included guitar and mandolin player Clarence White, drummer Gene Parsons, and bassist John York. Culled from two sets that took place that night, the recording quality on these 19 tracks is above average bootleg fare, and performances range from strong renditions of "Pretty Boy Floyd" and other Sweetheart of the Rodeo tunes to two separate versions of "So You Wanna Be a Rock N' Roll Star." Other bootleg-only highlights include Roger McGuinn sating the request of a heckling fan to play the song "100 Years" by offering up a quick snippet of the tune before the whole band launches into their next number. ~ Fred Thomas
